General Motors’s Cruise unit is being suspended by the California Department of Motor Vehicles from operating driverless vehicles in the state, effective immediately.

The agency’s notification Tuesday halts Cruise’s autonomous vehicle deployment, but doesn’t affect testing using a safety driver.

The move comes after a string of high profile accidents in San Francisco involving fire trucks and pedestrians.

Cruise had no immediate comment.
