‘Now And Then’

The Associated Press reported that The Beatles will be releasing their new song “Now And Then” on November 2, pairing it with “Love Me Do,” the first Beatles song that came out back in 1962. “Now And Then” was part of a set of unreleased demos that were written by the late John Lennon, who was tragically murdered in 1980 at the age of 40.

Lennon first recorded “Now And Then” in the 1970s when he was living in the Dakota building in New York City, according to The New York Post. In 1994, his widow Yoko Ono gave the demo to Lennon’s surviving bandmates Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison, the last of whom tragically passed away in 2001 after a battle with lung cancer. The three of them attempted to record the song, but they were unable to at the time because of technological limitations.

However, new artificial technology made it possible for the director Peter Jackson of The Lord Of The Rings fame to isolate voices and instruments in 2021’s The Beatles: Get Back documentary. McCartney and Starr then set out to complete “Now And Then” last year, and they’re finally ready to release it.

“There it was, John’s voice, crystal clear. It’s quite emotional,” McCartney, 81, said in a statement. “And we all play on it, it’s a genuine Beatles recording. In 2023 to still be working on Beatles music, and about to release a new song the public haven’t heard, I think it’s an exciting thing.”

Starr, 83, also felt Lennon’s spirit while recording the song.

“It was the closest we’ll ever come to having him back in the room, so it was very emotional for all of us,” he said. “It was like John was there, you know. It’s far out.”

Lennon’s 48 year-old son Sean, who he shared with Ono, was touched to hear the song as well.

“It was incredibly touching to hear them working together after all the years that Dad had been gone,” he said. “It’s the last song my dad, Paul, George and Ringo got to make together. It’s like a time capsule and all feels very meant to be.”

After more than 40 years, The Beatles’ last song will be unveiled next Thursday.

Harrison’s Widow Speaks Out

Harrison’s widow Olivia gave her thoughts on the song on the official Beatles website.

“Back in 1995, after several days in the studio working on the track, George felt the technical issues with the demo were insurmountable and concluded that it was not possible to finish the track to a high enough standard,” she said. “If he were here today, Dhani and I know he would have whole-heartedly joined Paul and Ringo in completing the recording of ‘Now And Then.’”

“Now And Then” was co-produced by Giles Martin, who could feel the power behind the lyrics.

“I do feel as though ‘Now and Then’ is a love letter to Paul written by John,” Martin told People Magazine. “I mean, I’ve never really asked Paul about it, and I’m not sure whether Paul would say, ‘Oh, that’s definitely it,’ because he wouldn’t want to second guess John. But that’s the sense I get. And I get the feeling that’s why Paul was so determined to finish it.”
